The Rising Action is when the British army was fighting the Patriots near the Freeman's home, (This is where Willy and his family lives). Jordan Freeman is fighting for the militia which is the patriots. Jordan Freeman is Lucy's husband and he is also Willy's dad. Later Willy finds out that his mother is gone. She was taken by British soldiers, Willy wants to go out and search for her, he think his mother is in New York. While she goes out to New York to look for her mother she meets a boy named Horace he is a young black boy who is about the same age as Willy and who works for Sam Fraunces.We find out that Willy's mother is with Captain Ivers who is vowing to sell her back into slavery since the book takes place from 1775 to 1783. Also Willy's mother is very sick. Willy starts giving out money for any information that may help her find her mother. Throughout all of this Lucy thinks she is hopeless and is probably not going to make it. Willy doesn't want to give up and keep searching for her. Meanwhile Uncle Jack earned his freedom by fighting in Militia but Captain Ivers doesn't wanna give him any freedom, but if he leaves he threatens to sell his wife.
